Some people think that the best way to reduce time spend travelling to work is to replace parks and gardens close to the city center with apartment buildings for commuters, but others disagree.
Discuss both of the views and give your opinion.

In our cities, if the parks and similar facilities are removed, and instead more residential buildings are erected, is it the necessary result that commuters travel faster? I hardly think so.[短句放心用]
To begin with, does high efficiency of commuting solely or really depend on whether workers have easy access to the workplace? Admittedly, [此处的让步就是对反方观点的简单讨论] taking a detour consumes time as the route has to avoid the parks and cannot go straight lines. Nevertheless, the ten or fifteen minutes on the road is not necessarily a drag that slows the commuters down. Instead, what actually stalls the urban travelers is the influx of passengers at every metro station or the huge and sluggish flow of motor vehicles. They are the real culprit. [短句刻意用] For example, it may take more than five minutes for a traveler to arrive at the platform, plus the time he or she waits before embarking on the train. [可以举例,但是要精炼,不是娓娓道来讲故事。]

It is also likely that many of the people prefer their suburban neighborhoods to the inner city. For example, many people would not like to live and work in the same zone of their city and like to escape from the CBD after work or on weekends. Either case would render the proposed practice ineffectual. In other words, if those apartments do not sell or sell well [注意这里sell的不及物动词用法], there will not be the desired large population that will benefit from the short distance of travel.
If we could all agree on the reasons, we would come to the realization that shortening the distance between home and work may not cut the time spent on traveling. With other measures, commuters are able to move faster.

Advertising has been an integral part of our economic and social life now. However, as a powerful technique of promoting sales, it has been censured by some people for its “main aim”: to encourage shoppers to buy unnecessary goods. I tend to think that this view presents a very one-sided picture of advertising.

The commentary is understandable that advertising creates unconscious desires. People holding this view may ascribe their over-consumption to advertisers’ exaggerated claims of their marketing pitches, which means advertising puts goods in a positive light, creating unrealistic expectations, all for the benefit of selling. Enticed by these messages, consumers would buy goods of little or no value to themselves on impulse, be it a new cell phone or a massage armchair.

To persuade potential customers through evoking their psychological appeals, indeed, is one objective of advertising. However, I would argue that there is a controversy in what constitutes necessities versus non-essentials. This ambiguous notion is changing, along with the change in generations. To explain, what seems nonessential now – a massage armchair, for example – may fulfill its function years later, whereas what seems required now – a cell phone, for example – may soon lose its value if operating systems suddenly upgrade.

My firm conviction is that the real objective of advertising is to promote effective communication between producers and consumers. Not only that, advertising helps maintain the demand for existing products and services.
