In today’s world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value our artists and writers. What can arts tell us about life that science and technology cannot?
关键词:art + science and technology + life
1. Art classes like painting and drawing are important to students’ development and should be made compulsory in high school. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (/1/7)
2. Some people think any government money spent in supporting the artists such as painters, musicians and poets should be spent on more important things. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
3. Some people think that arts (such as painting and music) do not directly improve people's life, so government should spend money on other areas. Do you agree or disagree? (/5/12)
4. Some people claim that public museums and art galleries will be not be needed because people can see historical objects and works of art by using a computer. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Over the past two hundred years, the huge progress achieved in science and technology has significantly transformed our world, but it has never made artists such as painters, musicians, and writers unnecessary in our life. This is, in my view, because arts can give us a lot of things that science and technology cannot.
Science and technology improves our knowledge about the world by telling us what it is like, or can be like. It was Newton, for instance, who told us why objects move and stop moving, and Einstein who told us that time is the fourth dimension of space. However, science and technology cannot tell us about ourselves, or why and how we should live in the world. And this is exactly where arts cut in.
As science and technology can influence our life on the outside, arts can move us on the inside. Through imagination, a painting, poem or novel can take us to the depths of our heart and make us understand the true meaning of our existence. Anyone who has ever read Ernest Hemingway’s Farewell to Arms will be struck by the cruelty of war and the value of loving and being loved, and those who have been inspired by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony will never give up even in times of adversity.
Furthermore, arts can lead us outwardly to the vast world, real or imaginary, which provides us with opportunities to understand our responsibilities for the world as a whole. For example, the movie Schindler's List tells us that we, as human beings, should love, rather than hating each other, and the novel Silent Spring gives us a warning that the Earth will be destroyed if we go on polluting it the way we do now.
In summary, though the advanced science and technology today has blessed us with a prosperous material life, we should never dispense with arts that reveal the meaning and value of that life.
01、Over the past two hundred years, the huge progress achieved in science and technology has significantly transformed our world, but it has never made artists such as painters, musicians, and writers unnecessary in our life. This is, in my view, because arts can give us a lot of things that science and technology cannot.
(2)Achieve
(3)Transform 改变
02、Science and technology improves our knowledge about the world by telling us what it is like, or can be like. It was Newton, for instance, who told us why objects move and stop moving, and Einstein who told us that time is the fourthdimension of space. However, science and technology cannot tell us about ourselves, or why and how we should live in the world. And this is exactly where arts cut in.
(2)Dimension 纬度
(3)Cut in 切入
(4)It is ... who...
03、As science and technology can influence our life on the outside, arts can move us on the inside. Through imagination, a painting, poem or novel can take us to the depths of our heart and make us understand the true meaning of ourexistence. Anyone who has ever read Ernest Hemingway’s Farewell to Arms will be struck by the cruelty of war and the value of loving and being loved, and those who have been inspired by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony will never give up even in times of adversity.
(2)On the outside 在外面
(3)On the inside 在里面
(4)Existence
(5)Be struck by... 被......打动
(6)Inspire 激励
(7)In times of adversity
04、Furthermore, arts can lead us outwardly to the vast world, real or imaginary, which provides us with opportunities to understand our responsibilities for the world as a whole. For example, the movie Schindler's List tells us that we, as human beings, should love, rather than hating each other, and the novel Silent Spring gives us a warning that the Earth will be destroyed if we go on polluting it the way we do now.
(2)Imaginary 想象的
(3)Provide somebody with something
05、In summary, though the advanced science and technology today has blessed us with a prosperous material life, we should never dispense with arts that reveal the meaning and value of that life.
(2)Socialize with... 与......交往
(3)Events
(4)Solely 惟一地(= only, exclusively)
(5)Be dependent upon/on...
(6)Harmonious

Some people say that the main aim of advertising is to improve the sales of products that people do not really need.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Introduction
Advertising has been an integral part of our economic and social life now. However, as a powerful technique of promoting sales, it has been censured by some people for its “main aim”: to encourage shoppers to buy unnecessary goods. I tend to think that this view presents a very one-sided picture of advertising.
Body Paragraph 1
The commentary is understandable that advertising creates unconscious desires. People holding this view may ascribe their over-consumption to advertisers’ exaggerated claims of their marketing pitches, which means advertising puts goods in a positive light, creating unrealistic expectations, all for the benefit of selling. Enticed by these messages, consumers would buy goods of little or no value to themselves on impulse, be it a new cell phone or a massage armchair.
ascribe … to …
Body Paragraph 2
To persuade potential customers through evoking their psychological appeals, indeed, is one objective of advertising. However, I would argue that there is a controversy in what constitutes necessities versus non-essentials. This ambiguous notion is changing, along with the change in generations. To explain, what seems nonessential now – a massage armchair, for example – may fulfill its function years later, whereas what seems required now – a cell phone, for example – may soon lose its value if operating systems suddenly upgrade.
evoke 唤醒 v.
psychological appeals
controversy 争议 n.
Body Paragraph 3
My firm conviction is that the real objective of advertising is to promote effective communication between producers and consumers. When a new product is to be introduced in the market, producers create memorable advertising campaigns that boost brans recognition, from which potential customers can be informed more about product advantages and know what suits their requirements and budget. Not only that, advertising helps maintain the demand for existing products and services.
introduce 引入v.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I would say that the main aim of advertising is to prepare a ground for the sales of products, but we cannot affirm that the promoted goods are unnecessary.
prepare a ground for 为…打基础
affirm 断言v.
