“Research has shown that nowadays business meetings and training are increasingly taking place online. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in this matter? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.”

People used to spend a lot of time and money traveling from one place to another for business meetings or training. With the advent of the Internet, however, online interaction is becoming a trend. In the business world, I believe this trend brings about more advantages than disadvantages.

  (2)Used to...

  (3)With the advent of... 随着......的到来

  (4)Bring about 产生

Needless to say, going online is far from perfect for all business meetings and training. Obviously, one big disadvantage of online meetings is that participants may have a difficult time gauging the reaction of other participants, since they cannot read each others’ body language as well as they can in face-to-face communication. Besides, if the presenters are not technically savvy or have a fear of communication technology, the meeting could prove to be a disaster. Further, an online meeting or training can be interrupted by the Internet disconnection, which is possible for one reason or another, and be made less serious than expected.

  (2)Needless to say 不用说

  (3)Far from 远不是

  (4)Gauge 判断

  (5)Savvy 精通的

(6)For one reason or another 因为某种原因

However, having business meetings and training online helps to boost efficiency and reduce costs. To begin with, to conduct an online business conference, the only thing required is the Internet connection without geographical limitations, and it is therefore a great method of time management. In addition, holding business meetings online offers the advantage of cost savings. Participants do not have to be flown in from distant points and put up in hotels since they can take part from any corner of the world. It is little wonder, then, that online meetings and training have become increasingly popular with business leaders in recent years.

  (2)Boost efficiency 效率

  (3)Geographical

  (4)Put sb. up 把......安置

(5)It is little wonder that... .......

  (6)Be popular with... 受......

  04

In conclusion, business meetings and training going online may have both positive and negative effects, but in the business context, it is certainly more an advantage since it can give a competitive edge to businesses by helping bring down their costs and improve their efficiency.

  (2)Context

  (3)Give...a competitive edge

Some people say that the main aim of advertising is to improve the sales of products that people do not really need.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

  Introduction

Advertising has been an integral part of our economic and social life now. However, as a powerful technique of promoting sales, it has been censured by some people for its “main aim”: to encourage shoppers to buy unnecessary goods. I tend to think that this view presents a very one-sided picture of advertising.

  Body Paragraph 1

The commentary is understandable that advertising creates unconscious desires. People holding this view may ascribe their over-consumption to advertisers’ exaggerated claims of their marketing pitches, which means advertising puts goods in a positive light, creating unrealistic expectations, all for the benefit of selling. Enticed by these messages, consumers would buy goods of little or no value to themselves on impulse, be it a new cell phone or a massage armchair.

  ascribe … to …

  Body Paragraph 2

To persuade potential customers through evoking their psychological appeals, indeed, is one objective of advertising. However, I would argue that there is a controversy in what constitutes necessities versus non-essentials. This ambiguous notion is changing, along with the change in generations. To explain, what seems nonessential now – a massage armchair, for example – may fulfill its function years later, whereas what seems required now – a cell phone, for example – may soon lose its value if operating systems suddenly upgrade.

  evoke 唤醒 v.

  psychological appeals

  controversy 争议 n.

  Body Paragraph 3

My firm conviction is that the real objective of advertising is to promote effective communication between producers and consumers. When a new product is to be introduced in the market, producers create memorable advertising campaigns that boost brans recognition, from which potential customers can be informed more about product advantages and know what suits their requirements and budget. Not only that, advertising helps maintain the demand for existing products and services.

  introduce 引入v.

  Conclusion

In conclusion, I would say that the main aim of advertising is to prepare a ground for the sales of products, but we cannot affirm that the promoted goods are unnecessary.

  prepare a ground for 为…打基础

  affirm 断言v.
