Some people argue that the government should not pay money for international aid when there are some disadvantaged people at home (homeless or unemployed). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

关键词:government + international aid + disadvantaged people at home

  1. Some people believe countries have moral obligation to help each other, while others worry about aid money does not reach the poor people. (/5/21)

  2. Some people think giving aid to poorer countries have more negative effects than positive effects. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2013/10/10)

  3. Some people think charity organisations should help people in great need wherever they live. However, others think they should help people in their own country.Discuss both opinions and give your own opinion.

Every year, the government spends tons of money on international aid, but some people do not like this, arguing that the money should go to the citizens at home still living below the poverty line.

At first glance, this opposition is well grounded. As the government of any country is mainly responsible for protecting its own citizens from harm of any kind, it seems quite absurd to give money to people in other countries when the citizens at home are suffering from poverty. For example, if there are still many people who are jobless and cannot afford their own houses, the government should try its best to help them by creating more jobs rather than paying money for international aid.

The reality, however, is that almost every country across the world, no matter how poor it is, is offering aid to other countries. When Japan was hit by Tsunami in 2003, for instance, it received financial relief from nearly all countries, North Korea included. Giving aid to those countries in need is always regarded as a right thing to do, not only because it can strengthen mutual friendship, but also because it will win global reputation for the country who gives away. This reputation will, in turn, translate into various forms of support, financially or politically, from other countries. A country which never gives aid to other countries may very likely be isolated from the rest of the world.

To conclude, offering international aid is never just a matter of money. Far from being a waste of money, it actually gives the country an opportunity to become a member of the international big family. My argument, then, is that giving appropriate financial help to other countries is always necessary, even when there are still some disadvantaged people at home.

01、Every year, the government spends tons of money on international aid, but some people do not like this, arguing that the money should go to the citizens at home still living below the poverty line.

  (2) Tons of money

  (3) Below the poverty line

02、At first glance, this opposition is well grounded.

  (2) At first glance

  (3) ...is well grounded ......

  (4) Absurd

  (5) Afford

03、The reality, however, is that almost every country across the world, no matter how poor it is, is offering aid to other countries. When Japan was hit by Tsunami in 2003, for instance, it received financial relief from nearly all countries, North Korea included. Giving aid to those countries in need is always regarded as a right thing to do, not only because it can strengthen mutual friendship, but also because it will win global reputation for the country whogives away. This reputation will, in turn, translate into various forms of support, financially or politically, from other countries. A country which never gives aid to other countries may very likely be isolated from the rest of the world.

  (2) Financial relief

  (3) Mutual friendship

  (4) Give away

  (5) Translate into 转化为......

  (6) Isolate

04、To conclude, offering international aid is never just a matter of money. Far from being a waste of money, it actually gives the country an opportunity to become a member of the international big family. My argument, then, is that giving appropriate financial help to other countries is always necessary, even when there are still some disadvantaged people at home.

  (2) Far from... 远非......

  (3) Appropriate

Some people say that the main aim of advertising is to improve the sales of products that people do not really need.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

  Introduction

Advertising has been an integral part of our economic and social life now. However, as a powerful technique of promoting sales, it has been censured by some people for its “main aim”: to encourage shoppers to buy unnecessary goods. I tend to think that this view presents a very one-sided picture of advertising.

  Body Paragraph 1

The commentary is understandable that advertising creates unconscious desires. People holding this view may ascribe their over-consumption to advertisers’ exaggerated claims of their marketing pitches, which means advertising puts goods in a positive light, creating unrealistic expectations, all for the benefit of selling. Enticed by these messages, consumers would buy goods of little or no value to themselves on impulse, be it a new cell phone or a massage armchair.

  ascribe … to …

  Body Paragraph 2

To persuade potential customers through evoking their psychological appeals, indeed, is one objective of advertising. However, I would argue that there is a controversy in what constitutes necessities versus non-essentials. This ambiguous notion is changing, along with the change in generations. To explain, what seems nonessential now – a massage armchair, for example – may fulfill its function years later, whereas what seems required now – a cell phone, for example – may soon lose its value if operating systems suddenly upgrade.

  evoke 唤醒 v.

  psychological appeals

  controversy 争议 n.

  Body Paragraph 3

My firm conviction is that the real objective of advertising is to promote effective communication between producers and consumers. When a new product is to be introduced in the market, producers create memorable advertising campaigns that boost brans recognition, from which potential customers can be informed more about product advantages and know what suits their requirements and budget. Not only that, advertising helps maintain the demand for existing products and services.

  introduce 引入v.

  Conclusion

In conclusion, I would say that the main aim of advertising is to prepare a ground for the sales of products, but we cannot affirm that the promoted goods are unnecessary.

  prepare a ground for 为…打基础

  affirm 断言v.
